There are several common misconceptions that come with
any college major. However, it seems mechanical engineering seems to have to
the most. One of the most common is that you have to be a natural born genius
to become an engineer. Most engineers are required to an extraneous amount of
math classes. For example, Calc 4 is a required course for engineers here at
MSU. Science also plays a key role in engineering, with chemistry also being a
deterrent. "Weeder" classes are what they are referred to. As a result, many
students stir away from engineering fields just because of those challenging
aspects. Many students may not have a clear understanding of what is actually needed
to succeed in this field. However, Raymond B Landis has written a book filled
with successful strategies for engineering. The title of this book is called “Studying
Engineering, A road Map to a Rewarding Career. In this book, it embraces the
challenging aspect of engineering and gives tips on how to succeed. From
studying to talking to your professors, Raymond gives confidence to students
who are still unsure about becoming engineers.
That book sounds very interesting and I will probably check that out. Did you have any misconceptions about mechanical engineers before you came to MSU? Are there any other misconceptions that you know of?
