Mechanical Hippotherapy

Contrary to what many people believe, Mechanical engineering is not just limited to Automobiles and machines. Mechanical Engineering varies vastly and can be incorporated into many different fields. One such example is back in 2009 when engineering students at Baylor university began constructing a completely Mechanical Horse.

Having over a year of experience working with horses, I have first hand knowledge of the benefits that horse back riding provides to individuals. However, with the benefits comes limitations and complications. When I worked at a horse training facility, one of the first problems that new riders faced was the initial mounting of the horse. The importance of the mechanical engineering profession is expressed very well in this article. People who would otherwise not be able to experience the benefits of riding a horse do to physical limitations are now given the chance due to a team of mechanical engineers.

  1. I'm really interested in how the mechanics would come together on the horse. Especially when it comes to the mechanics of the horse's legs. Along with science behind it it's nice to know that they can be used in non-scientific ways to help people experience things they wouldn't normally get to experience. Do you know any other projects similar to this which bring mechanical engineering to help others with disabilities experience something the wouldn't normally get to experience?
